Freedom by Anonymous

Today was not going to be about Dubya, the midterm elections, or how the Saddam verdict and sentencing was so deliberately timed it makes the Bush Administration actually look competent. No, today was going to be about how rubbish the Turner Prize is (again) this year, and how the only way I could think to retaliate was to write on the comment board at the end, "Thanks Tate Britain for the best and first art show I have ever seen. Your friend, George W. Bush."

But all the years of personal and global Dubya bashing is nothing compared to the just released (and spreading like blogfire) legendary campaign ad:

See Georgie, if you want to play the timing game the democratic (a word you still haven't looked up) blogosphere does too. Let's just hope this spreads fast enough to get America's conscience voting. Twice. Just like the Republicans.

And for those still pining after the Clinton years, you can catch Bubba's former advisor, Sidney Blumenthal, at The Guardian Newsroom, 60 Farringdon Road, EC1 on 15th November for a discussion and book signing of his latest title, How Bush Rules. To reserve a place, email: reply@guardian.co.uk. Starts 7PM.

For those Londoners curious what our big map means today:

Early returns in Tuesday's midterm elections should offer hints of what's to come, the first whiff of whether Democrats can seize the House and possibly the Senate.

Most of the heavily contested, down-to-the-wire races are east of the Mississippi River, in states with relatively early poll closing times. If a Democratic rout is going to happen, it will be clear from the first votes.

Showdown contests in Virginia, Rhode Island and New Jersey should be harbingers of trends in the Senate. House races in Indiana, Kentucky and Florida will provide election-watchers initial clues as to which party will control that chamber.

...

Early returns might telegraph who is right, and whether it will be a short night or a long one.

Good luck freedom

Spread it

Hi Mrs City Slicker,

Great video but did you know that
today is also the birthday of Albert Camus (1913-1960). His writing explored existentialism and the absurd.

Camus was a long time fighter for human rights. It was his opposition to totalitarianism that caused the break with his long time friend, Sartre.

There seems a certain appropriateness that Camus' birthday coincides with election day in the United States. One can only imagine what this great French philosopher would have thought of the state of the world in the early 21st century.

Here are some quotes from Camus to ponder as Americans head to the polls:

A free press can, of course, be good or bad, but, most certainly without freedom, the press will never be anything but bad.

A man without ethics is a wild beast loosed upon this world.

All modern revolutions have ended in a reinforcement of the power of the State.

By definition, a government has no conscience. Sometimes it has a policy, but nothing more.

Don't wait for the last judgment – it takes place every day.

Keep blogging.

Freedom is nothing but a chance to be better.

Ahhh the lefties are out again on city slicker blog. Do you truly believe life will change without GW? DO you really think anybody holds all the power? As a Brit I could care less about Republicans and Democrats and more about who is going to f^ck around with our politics.

Like the note at Tate though. Am amused.

Cheers to this post!

IN ORDER TO CATCH THE REPUBLICANS STEALING YOUR VOTE, YOU FIRST HAVE TO VOTE. There are huge and valid concerns about the new electronic voting machines that must be addressed. It is far too easy to use new technology to rig the vote. But if your fear of that leads you to decide that you shouldn't bother voting, well, then, I guess they've succeeded in snuffing out your voice without having to rig the machine. Make them break the law if they want to win. Vote. We'll catch them if they do. I promise.

C'mon America. Watch this video and call up whoever you know and tell them to meet you at the polls. And tell them to bring a broom, real or imaginary, with a big D on it. It's the only true American thing to do.

See ya at the victory party tonight!
